The Berthoud wrestling team was able to bring home five medals last weekend at the state tournament at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Five of the eight competitors were seniors, competing on the mat for the last time. This drove the boys to work extra hard in hopes to secure their first state title.
“All of us seniors have been wrestling since we were four years old, just working towards this moment to go out with a bang,” said senior wrestler, Kyle Conlon.
The first rounds of the tournament did not go as planned as seven of the eight Berthoud wrestlers got sent to the consolation bracket. Senior Brock Leypoldt was the only one to make it to the semifinals and ended up placing fifth in the tournament.
“Winning in those last seconds was nice and taking fifth place was great.” Leypoldt added.
Four other wrestlers were also able to secure a podium spot, with Dalton Williams Williams placing forth in 126’s, Colton Williams placing fifth in 132’s, Kyle Conlon placing fifth in 160’s, and Will Moneypenny placing third in 106’s. The team also came together to earn eight place out of fifty teams.
