A Return to Normalcy

Opinion:

As a result of capital insurrection, a raging pandemic, economic crisis, and racial injustice, the United States of America has endured more in just the past year than in the entire previous decade. The people of the United States have remained strong and diligent through it all. At the root of this problem, there is one culprit. Donald Trump, for the past four years, has intentionally uprooted the very foundation of our nation.

At the beginning of his presidency, Trump got rid of the most fundamental aspect of our democracy. He got rid of any civility and mutual respect within our government. He did this through constant use of insults, dismissal of credibility and expertise, and blatant negligence for the systematic process of political affairs. America is a reflection of her leader. Because of this, the country fell victim to Trump’s divisive agenda. For the past four years, disagreements were no longer civil, they became exponentially more combative. Trump’s hatred and lies seeped into the American people’s ways of life.

On January 20, 2021, America sent the world a message. President Joeseph R. Biden was sworn into the office of President of the United States of America and with him, decency was returned to politics. In his first day as president, Biden addressed the most pressing of issues. He signed 15 executive orders to address the nation’s most pressing issues. In addition to the executive orders, Biden made a statement in the White House on the night of his Inauguration, “But I am not joking when I say this, if you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect... talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot. On the spot. No ifs, and, or buts. Everybody... everybody is entitled to be treated with decency and dignity. That's been missing in a big way the last four years."

With that statement, Biden sent a message to not only our great nation, he told the world that the United States will no longer tolerate childish disrespect and blatant unprofessionalism. The swearing-in of President Biden was cathartic and regenerative for the nation. Over the next four years, the country will heal itself under the leadership of the most qualified president in our nation’s history. Empathy, kindness, compassion, and common decency will find their way back into not only our hearts but our diplomacy as well.
